It was a colourful, cheerful and diverse occasion at this year’s 39th Christopher Street Day in Berlin on 22 July and it provided the perfect opportunity for next year’s biggest sporting event in Germany – the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships – to celebrate its own diversity of 47 disciplines and more than 1500 athletes competing.
The organisers of Berlin 2018, which will be staged from 7-12 August co-operated for the first time with the Christopher Street Day and installed a massive family sports area where kids of all ages could try out exciting, child-friendly and fun athletics exercises.
Important tips and an extra boost of motivation was given to each child by IAAF World Championships Berlin 2009 heptathlon silver medallist Jennifer Oeser, who spent time with the kids in the Berlin 2018 family sports area explaining the versatility and fun of athletics.
In addition to that, extensive Berlin 2018 branding was showcased, including in front of the Brandenburg Gate and the Berlin 2018 design was rebranded for the day in rainbow colours.
In turn, the local LGBT community in turn gave its full support to Berlin 2018.
Nationally-famous drag queen Gloria Viagra did a 70-metre bungee jump in honour of next year’s European Athletics
Championships and then showed she was in touch with likely events in 12 months’ time.
“I am looking forward to the duel of Robert and Christoph Harting in the discus at Berlin 2018. Brother against brother, that will be highly exciting!” she exclaimed
