<p><strong>European Athletics is delighted to announce that the first ever edition of the European Running Championships will take place in Leuven and Brussels on 12-13 April 2025, with the masses joining the elites for a festival of running on the streets of Belgium.</strong></p>
<p>The inaugural edition will see road races take centre stage at a standalone European Championships, featuring three races over two days: 10K, half marathon and marathon. Europe&rsquo;s top distance runners will race alongside the masses, bringing the stars of the sport and their fans closer than ever before.</p>
<p>The marathon course will run from Brussels to Leuven, starting in the heart of the Belgian capital before reaching the finish in the historic heart of Leuven.</p>
<p>The European marathon champion had previously been crowned at the European Championships, but now the classic distance, and its finest exponents, will take the spotlight at their very own festival of running, with medals awarded for individual and team honours at all three distances. Mass-race participants can also compete for medals in brand-new &lsquo;country ranking&rsquo; competition.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The European Running Championships symbolises my vision of a sport that really is for everyone,&rdquo; said European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov. &ldquo;Young and old, male and female, fast and slow, big and small, elite and amateur will all compete together and simultaneously in mass marathon, half marathon and 10km races, with global and national ranking places on offer.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Karamarinov added: &ldquo;For too long, athletics has been seen as a rarefied activity, the preserve of only the super-fit and the super-gifted. All children, and a growing number of adults across our continent, take part in athletics, in the form of recreational running, every day. Yet many of them do not think of themselves as athletes. I am determined to bridge this gap.&rdquo;</p>
<p>European Athletics CEO Christian Milz said: "This will be a unique championships as every runner will be an athlete and every athlete can be a champion. It gives everyone in our sport the chance to experience that unique championships feeling. Welcome to the European Running Championships.&rdquo;</p>

<p dir="ltr"><strong>Amanal Petros and Domenika Mayer achieved a German double on home soil at the Hannover Marathon on Sunday (14) with both athletes smashing the course records in the process.</strong></p>
<p dir="ltr">Petros slashed almost one minute from his course record of 2:07:02, successfully defending his title in 2:06:05 despite the blustery conditions on offer in Hannover to win by over one minute from Kenyans Boaz Kipkemei (2:07:06) and Victor Kiplimo (2:09:58).</p>
<p dir="ltr">&ldquo;I did not expect to run 2:06:05 today. Without the wind I think I would have been around one minute faster,&rdquo; said Petros who lowered his German record to 2:04:58 in the Berlin Marathon last September.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Petros, who will compete for Germany at the Olympic Games in the marathon in Paris for the second time later this summer, kept something in reserve for the closing stages. He covered the last 2.195km in a fast 6:18 which yielded a negative second half split of 62:54.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">In the women&rsquo;s race, Mayer had the company of Kenyan veteran Sharon Cherop, the 2011 Boston Marathon champion, until the last five kilometres. Mayer maintained her pace in the latter stages for victory in a course record of 2:23:50 although she missed her lifetime best by an agonising three seconds.&nbsp;</p>

I am now looking forward to the Olympic Marathon. It will of course be a very different race on a hilly course and without pacers,&rdquo; said Mayer who took almost two minutes off the previous course record of 2:25:45.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Cherop faded back to second but the 40-year-old was also under the previous course record with her time of 2:24:41.&nbsp;</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Dutch record and victory for Nageeye in Rotterdam</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Olympic silver medallist Abdi Nageeye from the Netherlands recaptured his Rotterdam Marathon title on Sunday (14) in a Dutch record of 2:04:45 to move to fourth on the European all-time list.</p>
<p dir="ltr">After the race, Nageeye described it as his easiest marathon so far. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve never felt this before. It felt like we were jogging,&rdquo; said Nageeye as quoted by NOS.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">"I got so much adrenaline from the people. Rotterdam is great! Just 'Abdi, Abdi'."</p>

<p dir="ltr">Roared on by the crowds who thronged the roadside in the latter stages, Abdi eased away effortlessly in the last mile to recapture the title he won for the first time in 2022, defeating Ethiopians Amdework Walelegn (2:04:50) and Birhanu Legese (2:05:16).&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">Nageeye&rsquo;s hopes will now shift to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games where the Dutchman is hoping for win his second successive medal and maybe even improve on his silver medal from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.</p>
<p dir="ltr">"I hope so, I hope so. We are now going back to Kenya, making good plans. Paris will be very tough, it is not Rotterdam. We have to wait and see who Ethiopia and Kenya will select and then, after the best possible preparation, make the most of it," said Nageeye.</p>

German double in Hannover while Nageeye triumphs with a Dutch record in Rotterdam

<p dir="ltr"><strong>France&rsquo;s multiple European cross country champion Jimmy Gressier set a European 10km record of 27:07 on home soil in Lille on Sunday (17) morning.</strong></p>
<p dir="ltr">Gressier shaved six seconds off the previous mark which was jointly held by Julien Wanders and Dominic Lobalu as he won the race in a sprint finish from former world 5000m bronze medallist Jacob Krop from Kenya.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Gressier now has ownership of the European records at 5km (13:12) and 10km (27:13) and the Frenchman has hinted that the European half marathon record of 59:13 - set by Wanders in Ras Al Khaimah in 2019 - is also an objective.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">Gressier was slightly outside European record pace through 5km in 13:37 but powered through the second half in 13:30 and closed with a final kilometre of 2:40 to outsprint Krop who was given the same time in second.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">&ldquo;The road to the European Championships in Rome and the Paris Olympics has started well and I can&rsquo;t wait,&rdquo; Gressier wrote on social media after breaking the European 10km record.</p>
<p dir="ltr">A winner of nine European cross country titles across all age-groups, Gressier will be hoping to round in on his first track medal in Rome this June after finishing fourth in the 10,000m at the Munich 2022 European Athletics Championships.&nbsp;</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Almgren stuns with 26:52.87 10,000m in California</h2>
<p dir="ltr">The men&rsquo;s European all-time 10,000m list was thoroughly rewritten at The TEN Sound Running Meeting in San Juan Capistrano in California on Saturday (16) evening.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">Former 800m specialist Andreas Almgren continued his reinvention as a long distance runner by shattering the Swedish 10,000m record with 26:52.87 to move to third on the European all-time list behind Mo Farah (26:46.57) and Mohamed Mourhit (26:52.30).</p>

<p dir="ltr">A former world U20 800m bronze medallist, Almgren&rsquo;s range extends even beyond the track as he demonstrated by clocking 59:23 for a half marathon in Barcelona last month but the Swede will focus solely on the track this summer with a possible 5000/10,000m double on the cards in Rome.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Behind Almgren, Belgium&rsquo;s Isaac Kimeli and Great Britain&rsquo;s Patrick Dever clocked 27:07.97 and 27:08.81 to move to fourth and fifth respectively on the European all-time 10,000m list.</p>
<p dir="ltr">European U23 cross country champion Megan Keith also excelled on her 10,000m debut, finishing fourth in an Olympic qualifying time of 30:36.84 - the second fastest time in history by a European at U23 level.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Gr&oslash;vdal takes the plaudits in New York</h2>
<p dir="ltr">After finishing third on three occasions, Karoline Bjerkeli Gr&oslash;vdal graduated to victory in the New York Half Marathon on Sunday (17) morning.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Gr&oslash;vdal took the victory in 69:09, winning by a clear margin from a strong Kenyan contingent with Gladys Chepkirui (69:27), former two-time world marathon champion Edna Kiplagat (69:46) and Cynthia Limo (71:54) occupying second, third and fourth respectively.</p>
<p dir="ltr">&ldquo;I'm so happy to take a win here. I had a dream to do that so it's so fun. I really like to run in New York; it&rsquo;s my fifth time running here, and I love it. To win here is fantastic,&rdquo; said Gr&oslash;vdal.&nbsp;</p>

Gressier sets European 10km record in Lille

<p dir="ltr"><strong>Switzerland&rsquo;s 2018 European marathon silver medallist Tadesse Abraham won the Barcelona Marathon on Sunday (10) morning in a course record and Swiss record of 2:05:01.</strong></p>
<p dir="ltr">Now 41, Abraham shaved nine seconds off his Swiss record and lifetime best from the 2023 Berlin Marathon to consolidate his seventh-place position on the European all-time list.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">This was also Abraham&rsquo;s first career marathon victory since winning the Zurich Marathon two years and the Swiss veteran dedicated his victory to the late world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum who tragically died in a car accident in February.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">&ldquo;I was here last year and I was a bit disappointed because I got sick three days before the race and I was sixth. This year I really prepared for it and I eliminated all my mistakes from last year and I was ready to go for a fast time.</p>
<p dir="ltr">&ldquo;The course was good. There are some sharp corners - if we eliminate them, it would be even faster. Even though it was a bit windy at the beginning, we managed it because the course is fast and flat.&rdquo;</p>
<p dir="ltr">&ldquo;I want to give this victory to the late great marathon runner Kelvin Kiptum. I give this victory to him,&rdquo; said Abraham.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 dir="ltr">Nageeye breaks Dutch half marathon record on home soil</h2>
<p dir="ltr">Olympic silver medallist Abdi Nageeye from the Netherlands won the CPC Den Haag Half Marathon on Sunday (10) in a lifetime best and Dutch record of 60:21, improving his national record by three seconds.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">Nageeye&rsquo;s main target this spring is the Rotterdam Marathon in April when he will be targeting his third successive podium finish.&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">There were also fast times en masse from the European contingent in the Gent Half Marathon on Sunday. Brit Paulos Surafel ran a big lifetime best of 61:21 ahead of Simon Debognies who was seventh in 61:24 and winning the Belgian title in the process from Dorian Boulvin (61:25) and Koen Naert (61:33).</p>

Abraham improves Swiss record to 2:05:01 for victory in the Barcelona Marathon

<p dir="ltr"><strong>Amanal Petros highlighted the BMW Berlin Marathon on Sunday (24) morning from both a domestic and European viewpoint by smashing his German record.</strong></p>
<p dir="ltr">In a race won by Eliud Kipchoge for a fifth time in 2:02:42, Petros finished ninth in 2:04:58 to shave more than one minute from his previous national record of 2:06:27 and move to fourth on the European all-time list behind Bashir Abdi (2:03:36), Kaan Kigen Ozbilen (2:04:16) and Abdi Nageeye (2:04:56).</p>
<p dir="ltr">"I really enjoyed the atmosphere. The last two kilometres were wonderful, even though I was very tired. This race was very special. I was already expecting the time, although of course anything can happen in a marathon," said Petros.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Belgium&rsquo;s Michael Somers also improved to 2:08:08 to finish 16th to squeeze inside the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifying standard by a mere one second.</p>
<h2 dir="ltr">Purdue clocks 2:22:17&nbsp;</h2>
<p dir="ltr">After a spell on the sidelines due to illness and injury, Charlotte Purdue returned to top form with a ninth-place finish in the women&rsquo;s race in 2:22:17 to move back up to third on the British all-time list.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Purdue ran near identical splits of 71:16/71:01 to move from 16th at halfway up to ninth, picking off the likes of Romania&rsquo;s Delvine Meringor who faded to 12th in 2:23:25 having sped through the halfway point in 68:18.&nbsp;</p>

<p dir="ltr">Part of Germany&rsquo;s gold medal-winning team in the marathon at the Munich 2022 European Athletics Championships last summer, there was individual glory for Domenika Mayer who was the top German finisher in 14th in 2:23:47, a lifetime best by more than three minutes.</p>
<p dir="ltr">And a second Swiss record of the day was set by former steeplechaser Fabienne Schlumpf who finished 15th in 2:25:27 to improve her previous mark of 2:26:14 and finish comfortably inside the Olympic qualifying standard of 2:26:50.</p>

National records tumble in a record-breaking Berlin Marathon

<p class="p1"><strong>At the Mattoni &Uacute;st&iacute; nad Labem Half Marathon 2023, the fourth and final race of the EuroHeroes series, on Saturday (16) Tereza Hrochova of the Czech Republic and Sebastian Hendel of Germany finished first and second in the men&rsquo;s and women&rsquo;s races respectively, which was good enough for them to take the overall EuroHeroes titles for 2023.</strong></p>
<p class="p1">The first three half marathons of the series, which is held in the Czech Republic, took place in the spring in Karlovy Vary, Ceske Budejovice and Olomouc, with the final event being the weekend&rsquo;s Mattoni &Uacute;st&iacute; nad Labem Half Marathon 2023.</p>
<p class="p1">In the men&rsquo;s race, Hendel had to run under 1:06 to secure the victory, and he did so in impressive style, clocking 1:05:16 to take the win. This also secured him the overall EuroHeroes crown with 2018 points.</p>
<p class="p1">In the women&rsquo;s race, Hrochova battled it out with European Athletics marathon champion Aleksandra Lisowska for the overall title, with Hrochova finishing second in 1:13:49 and Lisowska taking third place in 1:15:18. Ukraine&rsquo;s Valeriia Zinenko took the race win, just six seconds ahead of Hrochova in 1:13:43.</p>
<p class="p1">This result meant that both Hrochova and Lisowska scored higher than the previous series leader Belgium&rsquo;s Hanne Verbruggen in the overall EuroHeroes standings. Hrochova was awarded the overall title with 2111 points, with Lisowska taking second with 2084 points, and Verbruggen third with 2076 points.</p>

<p class="p1">The EuroHeroes Awards Ceremony followed the final race and was an evening of celebration, recognition and inspiration. The event saw the series&rsquo; top-ranking athletes presented their awards by Marko Vasic, Running Unit Director at European Athletics, and Carlo Capalbo, President of the RunCzech organising committee.</p>
<p class="p1">At the start of the evening, Capalbo said: &ldquo;Every beautiful thing, every outstanding thing starts by chance. We had this idea about ten years ago. EuroHeroes aims to identify, promote, and develop European athletes. And that's what we did in 2018. In 2019, we received an award from European Athletics for the best European project.</p>
<p class="p1">&ldquo;Of course, we had a small, sad break, and now we are back in 2023. I am particularly happy to start EuroHeroes again because the quality of athletes who ran these four races is extremely high, so it was very competitive.&rdquo;</p>
<p class="p1">Mr Vasic added: &ldquo;European Athletics celebrates these amazing European athletes, winners of the EuroHeroes race series. With this exciting format, we are creating new heroes of athletics, amazing runners, and in the home of Emil Z&aacute;topek, a true European hero.</p>

Hendel and Hrochova crowned 2023 EuroHeroes following final race
