Event Bidding

Event bidding is the first stage in realising the ambition of bringing one of European Athletics’ events to a city in any of our 50 Member Federation countries.

It is a complex process of communication and cooperation between European Athletics and the relevant Member Federation and the city/cities interested.

To summarise our process, we ask our Member Federations to submit an annual questionnaire where they summarise the interest they have from their cities in any of our events, both sporting and non-sporting, over a period of 8 years.

There are then a series of deadlines (each event varies) to formally confirm the candidatures and submit the bidding documents. The evaluation is next where European Athletics gives the chance for each interested city to explain their bid before presenting the final documents and making presentations to the European Athletics Council who decide on the venues.

We currently have an event programme of 11 sporting events and 2 non-sporting events that our Member Federations can bid for. The map below shows which countries are hosting, bidding for or have the intention to bid for a European Athletics event.

The next top events to be allocated are the European Athletics Championships 2018 and the 2015 SPAR European Cross Country Championships at the November 2013 Council Meeting in Zurich.
