Great Britain's Martyn Rooney became the first European sprinter to go under 45 seconds for 400m this year when he clocked 44.99 the annual AtletiCAG meeting in Geneva, Switzerland on Saturday.

Rooney has a best of 44.60 set in the semi-finals of the 2008 Olympic Games but an injury-marred 2009 saw him only get to the semi-finals at last summer's World Championships in Berlin.

Ireland's 2005 and 2007 European Athletics Indoor Championships gold medallist David Gillick was second in 45.32 while his successor last year in Torino, Sweden's Johan Wissman had to settle for fourth in 46.28.

Mercedes Chilla set new Spanish Javelin record
Spain's Mercedes Chilla improved Spanish women javelin record to 64.07m, the fifth best European mark of the year, during the Spanish Clubs League Final in Valencia on Saturday.

Chilla, the 2006 European Athletics Championships bronze medallist, improved on her own previous record of 63.20m which had stood for four years. It was Chilla's third national record of her career.
