Russian stars Khabarova, Burkenya call it quits

Russian sprinter Irina Khabarova signs off at age 42.

Two top Russian athletes sprinter Irina Khabarova and triple
jumper Danila Burkenya, both Olympic medalists, have decided to hang their
spikes at the start of the year.
Irina Khabarova, a member of the 2006 European Athletics
Champion relay team and the silver medal winning team at the Athens Olympic
Games, decided to bid adieu to competitive sports at the end of a career
spanning over a decade-and-a-half.
Khabarova also won an individual 100m bronze medal at the
European athletics Championship in Goteborg.
At age 42, she ran a 100m sprint in 11.53 in 2008.
Khabarova was joined by Danila Burkenya the triple jump
bronze medalist from Athens Olympics in 2004. Burkenya also won the silver
medal at the European cup in 2005. He started his career as a long Jumper and
also won the European Cup gold medal in 2001 before making the switch to triple
jump in 2004.
The 30-year-old finished eighth at the World Indoor
Championship in Valencia and
also participated in triple-jump at the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.
His best of 17.68 came in 2004 at the national championship
in Tula.
