Germany's Hinrichs ready to return to competition

German shot putter Denise Hinrichs is back in serious training following a bad knee injury that kept her from competing during the summer.

She tore an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) when competing indoors in January and it has been a long road back to fitness for the 24-year-old, who is considered one of Europe's brightest talents in the event.

Hinrichs was eighth at the 2010 European Athletics Championships and had a stellar early career after winning gold medals at the 2005 European Athletics Junior Championships and the 2007 European Athletics U23 Championships as well as taking a silver medal at the 2009 European Athletics Indoor Championships.

“I will compete indoors even if the results are not so good; but it's the outdoor season that matters. The European Athletics Championships are almost as important as the Olympic Games,” said Hinrichs last week.

She has a personal best of 19.63m which she three indoors when finishing second at the 2009 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Torino.
