Debrecen and Hengelo win bids to stage EAA events
The Championships, on 12-15 July 2007, will be staged at the Debrecen Sportcentrum and almost all teams will be accommodated in three star university accommodation walking distance from the stadium. Debrecen was the host of the 2001 IAAF World Youth Athletics Championships and will host the IAAF World Road Running Championships in 2006.
There were also two strong bids for the 2007 European Athletics Junior Championships which wil take place on 19-22 July. Following presentations from the two venues Hengelo was chosen to stage the Championships ahead of Bydgoszcz (POL).
Hengelo will stage the Championships at the Fanny Blankers-Koen Stadium which hosts the annual Thales FBK Games Grand Prix meeting and staged the European Cup of Combined Events in 2004.
The Council also awarded the right to host the 2006 European Cup Winter Throwing to Tel Aviv (ISR) and the right to host the 2006 European Cup 10,000m to Antalya (TUR).
In regard to the European Cup 10,000m, the Council discussed the possibility of changing the date of the event from April to June or July. The Competition Committee will now carry out a survey of member federations to ascertain the level of interest for this proposal.
The Council agreed to change the competition regulation regarding the Junior age group at the European Cross Country Championships to read as follows: “Only athletes aged from 16 to 19 years on 31 December of the year of competition may compete in the Junior races.” This brings the regulation in line with the regulations for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships.
Finally, the Council decided to change the name of the EAA Development Support Programme to ‘European Athletics Support Programme’ to bring the name of the programme in line with the new EAA branding guidelines.
