Former European Athletics Indoor Championship 200m gold winner Ivet Lalova has been named Bulgarian Athlete of the Year 2008.

The 25-year-old made it to the semi-final of the Olympic Games in Beijing and the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Valencia earlier this year. Lalova had earlier won the title in 2004 and 2005.

She had also won the European Junior Championships 100m and 200m title in 2003.

In a poll organized by Atletika magazine an official publication of the Bulgarian Athletics Federation (BAF), she got 365 points, 11 more than triple jump Olympic finalist Momchil Karailiev. Hurdles Tsvetelina Kirilova, who made it to the semi finals of 400m at Beijing, finished third with 325 points.

"2008 was a comparatively good year for me. I am pleased about making a return to the ellite group, however I am still  a little unsatisfied as I could not make it to the final of the Olympic Games in Beijing," said Lolova.

"My primary goal in 2009 is the World Championship in Berlin. If my preparation goes fine, I will also try to participate in the European indoor Championship in Torino in March," she added.

Talented high jumper Mirela Demireva, who won the silver medal at the World Junior Championships came at the fourth position with 247 points while long jumper Nikolay Atanasov fifth with 213 points. Demireva was named best young athlete of the year. Sliven was voted as the Athletics Club of the year.
