'World title defence more important to me than
jackpot chase' says Great Britain's Olympic
champion Christine Ohuruogu.
Great Britain's World and Olympic 400m winner Christine Ohuruogu has made her priorities clear for the 2009 season. The 24-year-old has insisted that she will prefer defending her titles more than chasing the Golden League big money this summer.
Ohuruogu said that instead of going after the US $ 1 million jackpot on the Golden League circuit, she will rather plan her itinerary in a way that leaves her fresh enough to defend her title at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin this summer.
"Golden League meetings are an option, but it depends on what your goals are. If you compete everywhere, there are good chances that when you get to the major championships you could be burnt out. For me it is very important to defend my world title," she was quoted.
The Londoner could run the first two or three Golden League races but the likelihood of contesting six is not on the cards. She believes she is more of a championship runner than a serial contester, informed David Martin.
Ohuruogu along with other British stars is currently attending the Aviva warm-weather training camp in South Africa. She hopes her tryst in South Africa will help her add another world title to her already impressive cabinet of awards and trophies.
After emerging from oblivion to win the 2007 World Championship in Osaka, Christine Ohuruogu has proved her detractors wrong several times and the latest was her title win at the Beijing Olympic Games.
