European Athletics Council member and Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL) President Franco Arese has been elected onto the Executive Board of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI).

The elections for the top body of Italian sports were held on Thursday, when Gianni Petrucci was confirmed as CONI President for a fourth term.

Arese's election will offer a strong boost to the sport of athletics in Italy, with an Italian Athletics President returning to the top office of the Olympic movement in the country for the first time in 10 years. Gianni Gola, former president of FIDAL, was a member of the CONI Executive Board till 1999.

Athletics representation on the Italian Olympic Committee received a further boost with the election of Eddy Ottoz onto the Technical Committee and Marcello Marchioni onto the Regional Committee.
