European indoor silver medallist Boubdallah Tahri
of France clocked 8:02.19 to set a new European
3000m steeple record in Metz.

French Boubdallah Tahri set a new European steeple record clocking 8:02.19 at the Alma Athle Tour French series meet in Metz on Saturday.

The 30-year-old knocked off a full two seconds from the previous European record set by Simon Vroemen of Netherlands that stood at 8:04.95, set at the  Van Damme Memorial in 2005.

Kenyan Patrick Terer, who was third at the World Junior Championships in 2008, finished second with a personal best 8:13.96 ahead of another Kenyan Bernard Mbugua, who with 8:17.94 had a personal best.

"I'm really pleased, it's like a dream. I always said I want to beat the French record in my city Metz, but a European record is unbelievable," Tahri was quoted by French media as saying.

His coach Jean-Michel Dirringer was pleased with Tahri's superb effort in the last lap. Tahri also earned qualification for the IAAF World Championships in Berlin in August.

Tahri, the 3000m Steeple silver medallist at the European Athletics Championships in 2006 and two-time 3000m silver medallist at European Indoor Championships, will be one of Europe's biggest hopes in Berlin.

Last month, he had achieved the world lead in the 2000m steeplechase clocking 5:15.36.

In other events Mahmoud Farah of Djibouti achieved 2:19:49, a national record in  the 1000m.

In the women's events, Briton Nikki Hamblin clocked 4:10.59 to win the 1500m.

Jade Bailey of Barbados clocked 23.22 (+1.0) to claim the 200m.

The High Jump title went to Bulgarian Venelina Veneva after she cleared 1.92m. Russian Nadezhda Alekhina leaped 14.14 (-0.2) to win the Triple Jump title.
