Spaniard Ruth Beitia won the women's High Jump at the
European Athletics Outdoor Premium Meeting "Gobierno
de Aragón" in Zaragoza, Spain, on Saturday.

European champion Francis Obikwelu of Portugal had to be content with second place behind world medallist Derrick Atkins of the Bahamas in the much-anticipated 100m finals at the European Athletics Outdoor Premium Meeting "Gobierno de Aragón" in Zaragoza, Spain, on Saturday.

Despite a strong tail wind of +3.0, none of the athletes could achieve a sub-10s time. Atkins finished in 10.00s ahead of Obikwelu (10.08) and Samuel Francis of Qatar who also finished with 10.08s. Among the women, American Gloria Asumnu achieved 10.95 (+2.5) to win the race.

Spanish European indoor medallist Ruth Beitia had to ward off a strong challenge from Lavern Spencer of St. Lucia before taking the gold in the women's High Jump. Spencer nevertheless created a new national record of 1.95m in her third attempt but it was not enough to beat Beitia who flew over 2.01m to take the top prize.

The men´s 400m hurdles offered a solid performance from American Justin Gaymon who clocked 49.94, a meet record, to finish ahead of Polish Marek Plawgo (50.25).

The men's Pole Vault had a clear victor in American Jeremy Scott, as he was the only one who could clear 5.65m.

In the Long Jump, it was again a contest between two Americans. 29-year-old Brianna Glenn jumped 6.72m (+2.7) to take the honours ahead of Grace Upshaw (6.67, +3.0).

In the last event of the day, the men's 3000m, Kenyan Kiprono Menjo won the contest with local hero Jesus Espana running home in 7:44.15. Espana finished with 7:44.49.

Among the women, Hungarian Krisztina Papp gave a solid performance to finish with 8:53.60 in the 3000m.

In a close finish in the women's 800m Mayte Martinez beat former world gold medallist Zulia Calatayud of Cuba (2:01.85-2:01.89). Italian Cristian Obrist sprang a big surprise taking the men's 800m in 1:48.68.

Local star Frank Casanas bagged the men's Discus (66.35m) finishing ahead of Mario Pestano (65.53) and 2004 Olympic medalist Zoltan Kovago of Hungary (65.29).
