European Athletics mourns the passing of Frederick Holder |

25.11.2009 |
European Athletics regrets to announce the death of its Honorary Council Member Frederick W. (Fred) Holder, who passed away peacefully on 21 November.
Holder, who was a native of Great Britain, was a long-time administrator in athletics, serving most notably as the Honorary Secretary-Treasurer of the IAAF from 1970 to 1976 and then, after the post was split, as Honorary Treasurer until 1984. He was also a member of various IAAF committees and sub-committees in the 1970s.
He worked under three IAAF presidents (the Marquis of Exeter, Adrian Paulen and Primo Nebiolo) and his time in office coincided with both the transition of athletics from amateurism to the modern professional era and the transition of European Athletics from its status as an IAAF Committee to an autonomous Area Association.
In addition to being named an Honorary Council Member by European Athletics, Holder was recognised by the IAAF with its Veterans Pin in 1972 and an Honorary Life Vice-Presidency in 1984.
After his retirement, Holder remained interested in the sport and he and his wife Beatrice regularly attended the IAAF Congress, World Championships and other major events.
On behalf of the sport, European Athletics offers its condolences to the bereaved family.
