  • Another family affair as Ingebrigtsens take a one-two at the Hytteplanmila

The sight of an Ingebrigtsen raising his arms in celebration at the finish line should be nothing new in this extraordinary year for the Norwegian family but this time it was Henrik and not his younger brother Jakob who was victorious.

On the roads at home in Hole on Saturday, Henrik triumphed over 10km at the Hytteplanmila as he won in 28:41 from sibling Filip in 28:47. Double European champion Jakob withdrew from the race with illness.

It was a fine confrontation between the elder pair, though, as they both broke the course record of 28:50, performances which will give them further encouragement for 2019 as the family head to Flagstaff, Arizona for altitude training.

In a race which started and finished at the IL Holeværingen clubhouse, Filip delivered what could have been a key blow with 1.5 kilometres left before Henrik reacted well.

“I knew if I give up there is no hope but if I keep running as fast as I can, I could take him. There was a nice duel at the end there,” said Henrik, speaking to NRK.

Eritrea’s Okubamichael Fissehatsion was third in 29:12 with 19-year-old Simen Halle Haugen from Norway fourth in 29:22.

It was an historic day for Sweden’s multiple European medallist Meraf Bahta as she broke the national record by six seconds, winning in 31:38 to beat Norwegian pair Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal (31:43) and Ingvill Makestad Bovim (33:00).

Bahta has quickly transferred her fine form from the summer – she won European 10,000m bronze – to the roads and will be a major contender if she runs at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in December.

Ozbilen clocks 2:06:23 in the Amsterdam Marathon

Reigning European cross country champion Kaan Kigen Ozbilen from Türkiye was also in excellent form on the roads, finishing fifth in the TCS Amsterdam Marathon, a five-star certified road race by European Athletics Running for All, in 2:06:23 in a race won by Kenya’s reigning champion Lawrence Cherono in a course record of 2:04:06.

Ozbilen, 32, just missed his Turkish record of 2:06:10 set two years ago in the Seoul Marathon and he moves to second on the 2018 European lists behind Mo Farah’s recently set European record of 2:05:11.

Belgium’s Stijn de Vulder was the top European finisher in 12th in 2:16:57, one place ahead of Dutch champion Michel Butter in 2:17:18.

Straneo recaptures Italian half marathon title

Age is an irrelevance to the 42-year-old Valeria Straneo as she proved in Foligno on Sunday by winning the Italian national half marathon title for a third time.

Straneo was second over the 13.1 miles in 72:04 in a race won by Uganda’s Juliet Chekwel in 71:53.

The Italian had too much for her counterpart Sara Dossena, nine years her junior, who was fourth in 72:53 as Rwanda’s Cavaline Nahimana was third in 72:23.

Straneo regained a title she had won in 2012 and 2014. “I did not think I would have the legs to hold on at the end,” said the 2014 European marathon silver medallist.

Dossena is targeting the New York Marathon in two weeks’ time while Straneo is preparing for the Valencia Marathon at the start of December.

Ahmed El Mazoury was crowned the men's champion as he finished seventh overall in 64:03.

Italian and Ukrainian 50km race walking titles decided

Across Italy on Sunday, Leonardo Dei Tos won the Italian 50km race walk title in Reggio Emilia in 3:59:48 from Gregorio Angelini in 4:01:17. Beatrice Foresti triumphed in the women’s event in 4:52:07.

Dmytro Sobchuk was crowned Ukrainian 50km race walk champion in Ivano-Frankivsk on Saturday, taking the men’s title in 3:54:57 ahead of Serhiy Budza 3:59:07. Valentyna Myronchuk won the women’s race in a fast 4:18:50.

On the second day of the international walking meet on Sunday, there was also Ukrainian success as Vasylyna Vitovshchik won the women 20km in 1:34:28 and Eduard Zabuzhenko took the men’s title in 1:25:43.

On the road to the SPAR European Cross Country Championships, Ancuta Bobocel put herself in line to complete an amazing circle of success.

Bobocel, 31, was crowned the Romanian champion over 8km in 26:05 in Botosani to book her place in the team for the championships – 13 years after she won the U20 gold medal when Tilburg last staged the event.

She was a clear winner at the weekend as she beat Roxana Birca by 30 seconds while Nicolae Soare took the men’s 10km title in 29:33

In the U23 races, there were wins for Dorin Rusu (8km, 23:54) and Alina Butnariu (6km, 21:17) and in the U20s race, the champions were Adrian Garcea (6km, 17:38) and Veronica Olenici (4km, 13:32).
