  • Belocian takes back European Junior record

It is almost a year since the European Athletics Junior Championships in Rieti which saw France’s Wilhem Belocian break the European junior 110m hurdles record when he won gold in 13.18.

Now 19, he has taken the time down even more with another superb performance at the 21st Bauhaus Gala meeting in Mannheim at the weekend as he stormed to victory in 13.15 – the fifth fastest time in the world this year.

Impressive running for an athlete who could be included in the French team for the European Athletics Championships in Zurich where, of course, they will have one of the favourites as countryman Pascal Martinot-Lagarde is third on those world rankings with 13.05.

Until then, it will be an interesting battle between Belocian and Great Britain’s David Omoregie at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Eugene in less than two weeks time.

It was Omoregie who previously held the European junior record with 13.17 before Belocian took it back over the weekend.

Depending how well they fare in the United States could have an influence on their selection for the senior team in Zurich this summer.
