European Athletics has awarded the 2018 European Athletics Championships to the Germany city of Berlin.

The European Athletics Council made the decision Saturday morning after the German Athletics Federation and City of Berlin presented their candidacy to host the 24th edition of the event.

European Athletics President Hansjörg Wirz said, 'We are very pleased to confirm that Berlin will be the hosts of the European Athletics Championships in 2018.

“They have impressed us today with a fantastic interactive presentation. We are convinced that Berlin 2018 will be a great event.”

Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit said, “Berlin’s Olympic Stadium is one of the most modern stadiums in Europe. With the 2009 IAAF World Championships, we have already shown that we can organise an outstanding major international athletics event.”

DLV President Dr. Clemens Prokop said, 'We guarantee the 2018 European Athletics Championships will be organised at the highest technical level and with excellent conditions for the athletes.

“For German athletics, it is important that we have in 2014 the European Athletics Team Championships in Braunschweig, another major international event in Germany, to be now followed by the 2018 European Athletics Championships.'

Berlin 2018 will be the third time the European Athletics Championships is organised in Germany after Stuttgart 1986 and Munich 2002.

This weekend's summit in Zurich is the European Athletics Council's 138th official meeting.
