Bosworth's big moment

Home

Making an international breakthrough is not the easiest of tasks but to achieve it against two world champions is something pretty special.

No wonder Britain’s Tom Bosworth was lost for words after the best race walk of his life.

“I’ve never been so shocked, people were saying they have never seen me so quiet after a race. I was speechless,” said Bosworth after a victory on Sunday in Bratislava where his time of 18:54.18 broke the national 5000m indoor record by almost half a minute.

His win saw him beat, on home soil, Slovakian Matej Toth, the reigning 50km world champion, and Ireland’s Robert Heffernan, the gold medallist in 2013.

While there will be tougher challenges ahead, it is a major achievement for Bosworth as he broke the time of 19:22.29 which Martin Rush had set back in 1992.

Bosworth is from the Kent village of Kemsing and speaking to sevenoakschronicle.co.uk, he said: “I’ve never won an international race before, it’s definitely my biggest win.

“I don’t want it to come together too soon. It’s only just February, there’s a lot more training to come.

'But to walk under 19 minutes, to do that, you are dreaming. Only the best in the world do that. I can finally put myself in that group.”

Bosworth could not believe the lead he established as he won by over 15 seconds from Poland’s Grzegorz Sudol (19:09.62), from Heffernan (19:19.83) and Toth (19:25.42).
