European Athletics is pleased to announce the promotion of Célia Mendes (POR) to European Athletics Deputy CEO earlier this year.

Under the direction of CEO Christian Milz, Célia provides support across a wide range of management areas, including relations with European Athletics Partner Organisations and other stakeholders.

She is also responsible for managing the long-term planning, bidding and evaluation procedures for all European Athletics events.

“Célia’s impressive work ethic and professionalism have propelled her progress within European Athletics,” said European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen. “She will be a great asset to the office of the CEO and is the perfect role model for all woman working in sport and gender equality in general.”

Prior to becoming Deputy CEO, Célia was the Head of Bidding & Special Projects for European Athletics from 2015 and Competition Manager/Head of Competition from 2011, a position that she had occupied also between 2005 and 2008.

Célia’s career in athletics dates back to 1989 when she started as an athletics official and she was later appointed member of the National Council of Officials. In 2001, she joined the Portuguese Athletics Federation as Deputy General Secretary, a post she held until May 2005. From 2009 until March 2011, she was Events/Competition Manager at the Federation.

The Lisbon, Portugal, native holds a degree in International Relations and an Executive Masters in Sport Organisations Management (MEMOS VII) 2003-2004.
