  • Duplantis crowned Swedish Sportsman of the Year for 2018

Armand Duplantis was one of the big winners at the Idrottsgalan - the Swedish Sports Awards - which was held at the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm on Monday (21) night.

Duplantis, 19, was crowned Sportsman of the Year and he also won the Performance of the Year award. Duplantis was unable to attend the ceremony - his grandfather Lars-Ake Hedlund accepted the awards on his behalf - but he did record a message for the audience.

“So sorry I cannot be at the Idrottsgalan but thank you so much for the prize and all the support. Thanks the world's best grandfather for being there and receiving my prize,” said Duplantis, who was named Newcomer of the Year last January.

Even without the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships it would have been a stellar campaign for Duplantis. In the build-up Duplantis had broken the world U20 record three times (5.88m, 5.92m and 5.93m), won his first Diamond League event in Stockholm with 5.86m and then won gold at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere with a championship record of 5.82m.

Duplantis then left his mark at the European Championships with one of the most scintillating displays, clearing three more world U20 records all on his first attempts - 5.95m, 6.00m and 6.05m - to break the championship record and move to equal second on the world outdoor all-time list alongside Maksim Tarasov, Dmitri Markov and former three-time European champion Renaud Lavillenie.

Duplantis became the fourth athlete to be named male Sportsman of the Year after Christian Olsson (2003-04), Stefan Holm (2005) and Daniel Stahl (2018). He also becomes the youngest ever recipient of the award which came into being in 2000.
