  • Dutch federation to rehearse for European Athletics Championships

With the 2016 European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam on the horizon, the Dutch athletics federation has announced that the national championships in 2015 will be spread over four days of competition, rather than the usual two. The 4x100m and 4x400m relays have also been integrated to replicate the championships format.

The reasons for this change are to help their athletes get used to multi-day competitions, and to have a dress rehearsal before the actual European Athletics Championships held in the Olympic Stadium.

Not since the Olympic Games in 1928 has the Dutch capital staged a major athletics event but all that will change from 6-10 July 2016.

The Dutch team, led by Dafne Schippers in the sprints and Sifan Hassan in the middle-distances, enjoyed tremendous success during the European Athletics Championships this summer in Zurich, finishing the 5th nation overall in the medals standings. Schippers and Hassan will likely be among the poster girls for Amsterdam.

Nadine Broesen, who won heptathlon silver in Zurich, said: 'It would be cool to be cheered on in such a special city as Amsterdam. And the European Championships in 2016 will be my first big tournament in my home country. That makes it extra special to me.'

More Dutch athletes will hope to emerge with the approaching championships at home. The nationals in 2015 will offer clubs the opportunity to enter more athletes than usual and so this could also be the time to discover new talents.
