Ennis back in the old routine

Home

Heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill has taken her first steps to defending her Olympic title in Rio in 2016.

Ennis, 28, gave birth to her first child, son Reggie, in July and this week she has begun the countdown to her return to the sport.

The Great Britain athlete wrote on the social media site Instagram: 'Back in the gym... building back into training. Exciting and slightly scary! My journey to Rio starts now.'

Ennis has not competed at a major championship since her victory at the Olympics in London in 2012.

She was the poster girl for the Games, and delivered in spectacular style as part of the greatest 45 minutes British athletics has known - her triumph came as teammate Greg Rutherford was winning the long jump and just before Mo Farah won the 10,000m.

She won with a Commonwealth record of 6,955 points but more challenges still await.

The heptathlon has been on the Olympic programme only since 1984 and just one athlete has won it twice - American Jackie Joyner-Kersee - who retained her title in 1992 in Barcelona after glory in Seoul four years earlier.

But by the time of Rio, the biggest threat to Ennis repeating that success could be her own team-mate, the 21-year-old Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who ended the summer season top of the European Athletics rankings with 6,682 points from her victory in Götzis in June.

Johnson-Thompson has succeeded Ennis as the British No. 1, maintaining an impressive Olympic legacy for the team in the multi-events which saw Dame Mary Peters win the pentathlon in Munich in 1972, Denise Lewis triumph in the heptathlon in Sydney in 2000 and then Kelly Sotherton take Olympic bronze in Athens in 2004.

Ennis, who won gold at the 2010 European Athletics Championships in Barcelona, remains a huge icon for the next generation in Britain.

Even though she did not compete this year, back in February she was still named the most inspirational person in the UK as part of the Starbucks Youth Action which, says their website, inspires and supports 16-24 year olds who want to make a positive impact in their community.
