European Athletics’ Member Federations unanimously approved all eight proposed amendments to the continental governing body’s Constitution during the European Athletics Congress in Vilnius, Lithuania on Saturday (14).

General alignment with the changes made by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) last year was one of the eight proposals tabled on Saturday and its approval means the European Athletics Constitution will share the same set of fundamental principles as the IAAF on topics ranging from gender equity, transparency, eligibility criteria, term limits, athletes’ voice and a vote at the Council.

'We trust that as you have supported these changes at the IAAF level, you all agree these important steps shall be also made at the European level,' said European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen.

The other seven proposals were all unanimously approved by the 50 Member Federations relating to topics including 'roles, duties and power' and 'European Athletics Association (EAA) Court, EAA Code of Ethics and Ethics Board'.

Another proposal approved by the Congress was the implementation of good governance requirements for European Athletics Member Federations. A total of 46 Member Federations voted in favour of the proposals with four Member Federations voting against.

The Congress also voted unanimously to permanently revoke Valentin Balakhnichev’s honorary membership. Balakhnichev was given a lifetime ban from the sport in January 2016.

The 2019 European Athletics Congress will be held in Prague, Czech Republic.
