  • European Athletics mourns passing of Linda Haglund

European Athletics is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Swedish sprinting pioneer, Linda Haglund, a leading member of the athletics community.

Haglund competed in her first international championships at the age of 15 during the 1971 European Athletics Championships in Helsinki, the youngest athlete entered in the field at the time.

She went on to win five medals at European Athletics Indoor and Outdoor Championships highlighted by 60m gold in Munich 1976.

At the 1978 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Milan, Haglund set the national 60m record with a time of 7.13 to take silver, a time which still stands as a record today.

She was part of three Swedish Olympic teams in Munich 1972, Montreal 1976 and Moscow 1980. She had her best showing in Moscow by finishing fourth in the 100m final.

Haglund belongs to the Legends of '1956', a sports fraternity of outstanding Swedish athletes born in 1956: Björn Borg, Ingmar Stenmark, Thomas Wassberg and Frank Andersson.

A difficult moment like this reminds us that athletics is a worldwide family. The sadness and grief experienced by those close to Linda will touch many, not just in Sweden but throughout the sport.

Her commitment to the sport will be remembered and her strong personality will be missed.
