As the curtains come down on the nine days of unparalleled excitement at the Beijing National Stadium, it is time to congratulate all athletes and teams for their tremendous efforts and strong results.

On behalf of European Athletics, President Svein Arne Hansen and the members of the Council would like to thank all the European athletes and teams for their strong performances and conduct throughout the Championships:

'Once again, European athletes demonstrated why the old continent is considered the home of athletics, winning the highest number of medals (49) at the 15th edition of the IAAF World Championships in Beijing,' said President Hansen.

'Out of the 48 European Athletics Member Federations present in Beijing, 20 won at least one medal which is an improvement from the 18 in Moscow two years ago.

'Well done to Great Britain, Poland, Germany, Russia, Netherlands, Belarus, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Spain for bringing back gold medals and for providing the best highlights from Beijing.

'Europe was very well represented and the level of sportsmanship from our athletes always remarkable. This is very promising with less than a year until the Amsterdam 2016 European Athletics Championships.

'I would like to thank our gracious hosts in Beijing, and I look forward to when the World Championships comes back to Europe in 2017 when it takes place in London at the Olympic Stadium.'
