  • Eurosport announces deal with EBU to show elite European Athletics events until 2019

Pan European agreement includes exclusive coverage in the UK of the 2016 European Athletics Championships

Eurosport has announced today that it has extended its multiplatform rights for elite-level championships organised by European Athletics.

The European-wide agreement, acquired from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), covers a series of top athletics events over the next four years.

Kicking off with the 2016 European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam from July 6-10, the agreement also includes the 2017 and 2019 European Athletics Indoor Championships, as well as the 2017, 2018 and 2019 European Athletics Team Championships.

“Eurosport has firmly established itself as the destination of choice for fans of Olympic sports on a year-round basis,” Eurosport Chief Executive Officer Peter Hutton said.

“This deal demonstrates our commitment to athletics and the Olympic movement as we look forward to beginning our coverage of the Olympic Games across Europe in two years’ time.”

Coverage of this year’s European Athletics Championships in the UK will be enhanced by triple jump legend Jonathan Edwards, who has been signed as Eurosport’s Lead Presenter to head up the channel’s flagship programming from 2016, including the Olympic Games from 2018.

The deal underpins Eurosport’s commitment to athletics, with the broadcaster set to fuel the passion of viewers this year with coverage of selected indoor and outdoor meetings, major marathons from around the world and the IAAF Diamond League.
