Evora is planning a big summer

Home

Nelson Evora proved in Prague last month that age can never defy a champion – and now he wants to make another mark.

Portuguese triple jumper Evora, who is 31 later this month, has set himself the target of breaking his personal best this summer on the back of his gold medal at the European Athletics Indoor Championships.

I am physically fit, without any kind of problem, and thinking about getting better jumps. Without doubt, I am going to prepare myself in the best way possible to beat my personal best, this is one of my main goals of the season.

Evora’s biggest jump is the 17.74m national record he achieved in Osaka in 2007 on his way to gold at the IAAF World Championships.

A year later he became Olympic champion with 17.67m in Beijing and then in Prague just a few weeks ago he proved he has not lost his winning touch as he took his first major crown since China with victory with 17.21m.

With the return of Teddy Tamgho this summer, their duels could be one of the best events of the season as the Frenchman bids to defend his title at the world championships.

And how fitting for Evora that he will go back to the place of his 2008 glory as he seeks another big title with the event taking place in Beijing’s Olympic Stadium.

Speaking to desporto.sapo.pt, Evora added: “I enjoy being able to make good triple-jumps, because it’s a unique feeling when everything is aligned and well worked to achieve a constant result above 17.50 or 17.60m. That is the best feeling of all.'

Those comments alone show the enthusiasm that is still flowing through Evora who showed his determination in Prague after two no jumps. He moved into the lead in the next round with 16.89m before sealing victory with his last effort.

A big summer awaits - to see how far he can go.
