  • Fast early season times for Hughes and Lalova-Collio

European 100m champion Zharnel Hughes will aim to make a similar impact on the global stage at the IAAF World Championships in Doha later this year and the 23-year-old won at the Meeting de Guadeloupe in Baie Mahault on Saturday (18), threatening the 10 second-barrier in the process.

Just a few hours after teammate and European silver medallist Reece Prescod clocked 9.97 in the Shanghai Diamond League with a following wind, Hughes produced a fine victory in Baie Mahault in 10.03 into a 0.9 m/s headwind. It was a comprehensive win for Hughes, who won gold in Berlin in a championship record of 9.95, with US athlete Bryce Robinson second in 10.18.

Teammate Jodie Williams also maintained her good early season form with another clear-cut win in the 200m. A fortnight after breaking her eight-year-old 100m lifetime best with 11.17, Williams broke the 23 second-barrier in wind-legal conditions in 22.92. Her lifetime best of 22.46 dates back to the 2014 European Championships in Zurich where she won silver behind Dafne Schippers at the age of 20.

Frenchman Wilhem Belocian, the 2016 European 110m hurdles bronze medallist, also looked good as he ran his best time for almost three years to win narrowly in 13.35 from Barbados’ Shane Brathwaite in 13.36.

Lalova-Collio rolls back the years with 200m victory in Osaka

A day after celebrating her 35th birthday, Bulgaria’s Ivet Lalova-Collio ran her fastest time since the 2016 Olympic Games in the 200m at the Golden Grand Prix in Osaka.

Lalova-Collio might be officially recognised as a veteran now but the former European champion is still producing performances of the highest vintage. Twelve years after competing on the same track at the IAAF World Championships, Lalova-Collio came away with victory in a meeting record of 22.55, eclipsing the previous 18-year-old mark of 22.63.

That time will be sufficient to qualification for not only the 2019 World Championships but also the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo where Lalova-Collio looks set to make her fifth successive appearance.

There was also delight for Germany’s Alina Reh in Karlsruhe as she secured her qualifying time for the 5000m in Doha.

With the standard set at 15:22, Reh won in a solo 15:12.96. Denmark's European U23 champion Anna Emilie Moller took the 3000m steeplechase in 9:47.92 and Belgium’s Isaac Kimeli won the 1500m in 3:38.46.

Alvaro de Arriba was one of the stars of the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow as he won the 800m title but teammate Jesus Gomez had the better of him over 1000m on Saturday at the Ibiza Meeting, winning in 2:20.62 from de Arriba in 2:21.37.

In the rain of Monselice on Saturday, Lorenzo Dini and Isabel Mattuzzi were crowned Italian 10,000m champions in 28:51.99 and 32:36.50 respectively.

And as part of his speed preparations for excursions over the longer distances on the track this summer, Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa, the European 10,000m bronze medallist, won over 1500m in 3:40.03 in Trento – also in the rain – on Sunday.
