  • In-form Reh motors to a 31:23 10km clocking in Berlin

German star Alina Reh captured the headlines for the second weekend running with a brilliant victory in the Bridgestone Great 10K in Berlin on Sunday (14).

Having broken her German U23 half marathon record seven days earlier in Cologne by nearly two minutes, this time she was rewriting history over the shorter distance with another emphatic display.

Reh won in 31:23, beating her old mark by an eye-catching 15 seconds which was set in this race last year, as she defeated Kenya's Gladys Kimaina (31:46) as Switzerland's Fabienne Schlumpf ran a national record of 32:01 in third.

“This was my last race of the season and before having a three-week break I wanted to give everything that was left,” said Reh, who made her senior breakthrough with a fourth-place finish in the 10,000m at the 2018 European Championships.

Kimaina was the early leader but Reh was never far away and with two kilometres left, the German moved ahead decisively.

Reh, 21, is improving with every race. Her time is the second fastest by a European this year – France’s Clemence Calvin ran 31:20 in June – and now she is only 26 seconds away from the national record held by Irina Mikitenko since 2008. Reh’s time is significantly the fastest in history by any European athlete at U23 level.

Richard Ringer was the first German home in the men’s race in seventh in 29:22 as Kenya’s Vincent Kibet won in 27:21 on his international debut.

Moller opens cross country season on a winning note

While Reh was putting a close to her season, Denmark’s Anna Emilie Moller - who is also 21 and a long-time contemporary of Reh’s - opened her account with victory at Cross Challenge in Cardiff on Saturday (13).

Moller, the reigning European U23 3000m steeplechase champion, won the senior women’s 6.4km in 21:48 from Kate Avery in 21:52 and Emily Hosker-Thornhill in 21:54.

Moller was seventh last year when Reh won gold in the U23 race at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Samorin and once more she ran superbly to achieve this fine success in Wales.

In the senior men’s race over 9.6km, Charlie Hulson pulled away in the closing stages to win in 29:53 from fellow Brits Mahamed Mahamed in 29:54 and Adam Hickey in 29:57.

Chemtai Salpeter sets another Israeli record in Lisbon

It has been the greatest year in the career of Israel’s Lonah Chemtai Salpeter so far and the European 10,000m champion now has another landmark to celebrate.

Chemtai Salpeter was second in the Lisbon Half Marathon in 67:55, breaking her national record time of 68:58 which she had set at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Valencia in March. Another national record must surely beckon next month as Chemtai Salpeter builds up to the Florence Marathon.

She is now second on the European lists, too, after a race which was won by Ethiopia's Yebrgual Melese in 67:18. Ana Dulce Felix returned from maternity leave to finish eighth in 71:50.

Home successes on the roads for Claude-Boxberger and Gressier

France’s Ophelie Claude-Boxberger followed in the footsteps of her late father Jacky by winning the 20K de Paris on Sunday.

Jacky triumphed in 1982 and Ophelie, 29 became the first French female winner of the race for 17 years with victory on the streets of Paris in 69:48 as she beat Ethiopia's Chaltu Dida, who was second in 69:57, and France’s Liv Westphal, who was third in third in 71:10.

France made podium in the men’s race as Hassan Chahdi finished third in 59:51 behind Eritrean Samuel Tsegay (58:23) from Rwandan Felician Muhitira (58:35).

There was more French success over 10km in Rennes and a good pointer towards this year’s SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Tilburg in December.

Jimmy Gressier won the U23 title in Samorin last year and he showed his ability once more albeit on a different surface, winning in the same age-group event in 29:21. Teammate Julien Rebeck took the U20 men’s race in 29:24, triumphing in the four-way international against Great Britain, Italy and Portugal.

Lauwaert wins Eindhoven Marathon in 2:30:22

Belgium's Nina Lauwaert was the surprise winner of the women's race in the Eindhoven Marathon, lowering her personal best of 2:37:26 in style to win in 2:30:22 from Kenya’s Betty Chepleting in 2:31:16.

Elsewhere on the roads, Multiple European cross country medallist Olivera Jevtic, 41, won the Zagreb Marathon in 2:37:11 and Poland’s Agnieszka Glomb won the Graz Marathon in 2:54:03.

Also in Graz, Lemawork Ketema (63:55) and Cornelia Moser (76:12) secured the victories and the half marathon titles in the process.

Susan Krumins was the top European finisher at the Groningen 4-Miles in 20:01 behind Kenyans Eva Cherono (19:49) and Valentina Mateiko (19:57) while long-time British internationals Andy Vernon (63:36) and Lauren Howarth (74:13) ran out winners at the Manchester Half Marathon.
