  • German athletics journalist Christian Fuchs dies

It is with great sadness that European Athletics has learnt of the death of the well-known German athletics journalist Christian Fuchs at the age of 43 on Monday.

Christian died at home in the Bavarian town of Straubing after losing his battle with cancer.

He started his professional life in banking but quickly switched professions to be involved with his passion, athletics.

He was the founder, designer and first editor-in-chief of the German athletics federation website www.leichtathletik.de, which today has more than 500,000 visitors a month.

He went freelance in 2013 but continued to work extensively for the German athletics federation and, specifically, the website he founded until he was too ill to continue.

We would like to repeat the words here that the German athletics federation have published on their website in memoriam of their colleague (see full version here in German).

“Technically, Fuchs was an outstanding journalist with a great passion for accurate research and detailed knowledge, as well as a team player and visionary who stuck to his ideas even when others did not believe in them. The courage to make decisions was one of his most successful attributes. However, he was simply a humble and lovable person.”

Christian was also immensely popular among his international colleagues and, helped by an excellent command of English and a friendly demeanour, was an invaluable source of information about German athletics and athletes.

European Athletics wishes to pass on its sincerest condolences to his family. He will be sorely missed by his many friends and fellow journalists around the world.
