  • Hansen looks ahead after positive vote on IAAF reforms

European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen has hailed last Saturday’s overwhelming vote by the Congress of the International Association of Athletics Federations to pass a package of governance reforms and pledged the full support of Europe in the process to rebuild trust in the sport.

“With such a strong vote in favour of the proposals, the Congress did the right thing and sent the clear signal of intent to the world,” he said.

“It was an historic day for sure and we can be proud of the open, informed and thoughtful discussions leading up to the decision, but there are still a lot of issues and bad news from the past to be addressed and we have to be ready to deal with all of it.'

President Hansen said that European Athletics would step up and show its commitment to practical change in the area of governance and integrity at the continental and national levels.

He announced that he has asked European Athletics Council member Erich Teigamägi of Estonia to chair a Constitutional Reform project team to review the European Athletics Constitution and identify any amendments required in light of the changes made by the IAAF.

“Enhancing governance has been at the top of our agenda for some time already and in many ways we have been a leader in this field with our open voting in Council meetings and our EAA Court, but it is important that we follow up the IAAF decision by making sure the two Constitutions are completely in line,” he said.

Others named to the team include Vice President Jean Gracia, Council members Sylvia Barlag and Marton Gyulai, and European Athletics Court Member Thore Brolin of Sweden.

Addressing the issue of governance at the national level, European Athletics staged the first of a series of good governance workshops open to Member Federation leaders during its recent Convention in Funchal, Portugal. Expecting 10-15 participants, the organisers were delighted when more than 60 turned up on the day.

According to President Hansen, “this demonstrated that the federations in Europe have felt the impact of the scandals the sport has faced in the last year or so and they are interested to learn what they need to do to move forward”.

Hansen said that European Athletics will be announcing a number of other initiatives related to rebuilding trust in the sport in the coming weeks.

“Backing our words with positive action is at the top of our agenda,” said Hansen.
