  • Hughes speeds to a world-leading 9.91 100m in Kingston

Zharnel Hughes moved to equal fourth on the European all-time 100m lists with a world-leading mark of 9.91 at the JN Racers Grand Prix in Kingston, Jamaica on Saturday (9) to put down his credentials for gold at this summer’s Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships.

In a year where he was first across the finish-line in the 200m at the Commonwealth Games but subsequently disqualified for making contact with Jereem Richards in the adjacent lane, the Brit showed his ability over the shorter distance, beating American Noah Lyles in 9.93 and Jamaica’s 2011 world champion Yohan Blake in 10.00.

Hughes, 22, did not have the best of starts by virtue of his blocks slipping but came storming through in the centre of the track in the second half of the race to smash his personal best of 10.01, which he had run also in Kingston in February.

His performance puts him alongside the Netherlands’ Churandy Martina and fellow Brit James Dasaolu on the European all-time lists jointly led by Portugal’s Francis Obikwelu and France’s Jimmy Vicaut with 9.86 from Linford Christie with 9.87.

Hughes has always showed such great potential and now - as the only European to break 10-seconds this summer - he has the speed to go all the way in Berlin.

The power of the way he came through in the race was impressive and he was delighted with his success.

“It was a great race,” said Hughes. “Unfortunately, my blocks slipped when I pushed off so it hampered my start a little bit. But I am in great form so I regained my composure and just relaxed while maintaining my phases and I came through successfully.”

Golitin smashes 100m PB for gold in Jesolo

A new name on the European sprinting scene emerged at the Mediterranean U23 Games in Jesolo, Italy on Saturday.

Amaury Golitin only reached the semifinal stage at the European Athletics U23 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland last summer but the 21-year-old might be eyeing a spot in the final on the senior stage in Berlin after his breakout performance to win the 100m title in Jesolo.

Golitin improved his PB from 10.35 to 10.26 in the heats but there was much more to come from this hitherto little-known French sprinter. He decimated his lifetime best again in the final with a 10.07 clocking, the sixth fastest time by a European sprinter in 2018.

France topped the medal table with 17 gold medals although hosts Italy won the most number of medals - 38 in total - including 14 gold medals.

Other highlights from the two day competition included Türkiye’s Emel Dereli winning the shot put with 18.12m and Filippo Randazzo winning the long jump title on home soil with 7.88m ahead of compatriot Gabriele Chila with 7.82m.

Kambundji, Lemaitre and Pedroso post fast times in Geneva

After winning bronze in the 60m at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham in March, Switzerland’s Mujinga Kambundji will be looking to transfer that success to the outdoor stage in Berlin.

At the AtletiCA Geneva Meeting in Geneva on Saturday, she showed good form to win the 100m in 11.16 from France's Orlann Ombissa (11.26) and Britain’s Daryll Neita (11.29).

Switzerland, with Kambundji running the third leg, also posted a fast 42.71 to win the 4x100m relay ahead of Great Britain in 42.88.

The 200m also produced quick times as Britain’s Jodie Williams lowered her season’s best to 22.75 to beat teammate Bianca Williams (22.80) and Switzerland's Sarah Atcho in (22.85).

Olympic 200m bronze medallist Christophe Lemaitre also ran a big season’s best of 20.35 although he was pushed all the way by teammate Stuart Dutamby, who came away with a lifetime best of 20.41.

They also joined forced in the 4x100m relay at the start of the programme where France came away with victory ahead of Great Britain, 38.62 to 38.87.

Yadisleidy Pedroso moved to second on the 2018 European lists with a 54.98 clocking in the 400m hurdles ahead of home favourite Lea Sprunger in 55.60.

In Pirgos on Saturday, Maria Belibasaki had a successful weekend with a 400m personal best of 51.84 to move to third on the Greek all-time lists.
