The men’s 1500m final will be one of the highlights at the Irish National Senior Track and Field Championships on Sunday 20 July.

As of last night, four Irishmen have achieved the 1500m qualifying standards (3:39.30) for the European Athletics Championships with Ciaran O'Lionaird running 3:37.72 in Watford.

O’Lionaird earned a brilliant 3000m bronze medal at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Gothenburg.

He now joins Paul Robinson, John Travers and David McCarthy who had previously secured qualification standards.

At the same race in Watford, Eoin Everard was fourth in 03:40.4, his season’s best stands at 3:39.64 which he ran at the Morton Games, and he could also pose a threat on Sunday.

The athlete who wins the national title will be sure to earn a spot for Zurich. Team selectors will then decide which other athlete is qualified. Selectors may consider championship potential, consideration of fastest qualification times and based on current form.

The Irish team for the European Athletics Championships will be announced on Monday 21 July.
