Jakob Ingebrigtsen cruised to a Norwegian 5km record of 13:28 on his season’s debut in Stavanger on Wednesday (20) evening while older brother Henrik was also under the previous mark of 13:37, finishing second in 13:32.

Running on a flat but twisty two-lap course in the outskirts of Stavanger, just north of their hometown of Sandnes, the Ingebrigtsens were outside national record pace through halfway in 7:00 but 19-year-old Jakob accelerated markedly on the second lap to add yet another record to his collection.

'It was first and foremost very fun to get the starting number on. I had to wake the body up a little. The more I increased the pace, the legs didn't get any heavier,' Jakob told NRK after the race.

This was Jakob’s first race since winning his fourth successive U20 title at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon and his first race as a fully-fledged senior. Even though Jakob hasn't been able to train at altitude this spring, he told reporters that his training has gone especially well and he is hoping to gauge his shape on the track later this season.

“Compared to the same time last year, I must say that I have taken a step in the right direction again,” added Jakob whose next race is likely to be over 2000m at the Impossible Games in Oslo on 11 June.

Filip wasn’t in action last night but a third Ingebrigtsen did compete. Younger sister Ingrid, 14, clocked 18:00 to top the U15 standings.
