  • Jakob looks to keep it in the family

He is the teenager from a family of two European 1500m champions, one who was crowned just days ago.

But if Jakob Ingebrigtsen is under pressure this week as he goes searching for a medal of his own, he could not have received a better endorsement.

At 15, Jakob is the younger brother of Henrik, 25, and Filip, 23, the famous Norwegian middle-distance siblings who are all coached by their father Gjert.

On Tuesday in Bydgoszcz, Jakob will take his place on the start line for the heats of the 1500m at the IAAF World U20 Championships as one of the youngest participants in the whole competition.

Filip won gold at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam and insists Jakob will reap the benefits of their dad first coaching the older boys:

“Jakob is probably the biggest physical talent (of the three of them). Even when he was just six or seven, he had a natural physique for running and has always been very strong when it comes to cardio. He can be really good.

“With our father as our coach, he has experimented with Henrik and me and found the best possible way for us to train.

“It means he does not make mistakes with Jakob. He already knows what is working and what is not working. Jakob benefits from that.

“We tried different types of training – altitude, intervals - strength workouts, core and sprints, but he (our father) does not need to try out new things with Jakob but still do the ones that he knows.'

Filip came through for a famous win in Amsterdam with Henrik, the 2012 gold medallist, taking bronze.

And being together on the track works for the brothers.

“Jacob is so fast and has grown a lot and he is training with us every day,” said Filip.

“It not only motivates him but it encourages him, we give him advice on how to train and how to do every workout “We are pushing each other and always have.”

The teenager's speed has been impressive this summer, none more so than at home in Norway in June with a stunning run at the Bislett Games in Oslo where he finished ninth in the 1500m in 3:42.44, an unofficial world record for a 15-year-old.

It is a time which leads the European Athletics under-20 rankings and Jakob will need all his pace as it looks set to be a fast competition in Poland, as Kenya’s Kumari Taki, 17, will be the favourite, a year on from winning gold at the world youth championships in 3:36.38.
