Poland's Karolina Jarzynska set down an impressive marker for the European Athletics Championships when she successfully defended her title at the Lodz Marathon on Sunday.

Jarzynska triumphed in 2:28:12, the sixth best time by a European woman this year, as she beat Kenya's Gladys Kipsoi, who was second in 2:34:20, and Ukraine's Svitlana Stanko, third in 2:34:55.

Victory by over six minutes is impressive whatever the race or conditions and Jarzynska will now come into the picture for Zurich in August.

Yared Shegumo, now with Polish citizenship, won the men's race in 2:10:41 ahead of Kenya's Hassan Mogaya in 2:10:47 and Ethiopian Gelgelo Tona in 2:10:53.

Staying in Poland, there was a national title for the national record-holder Henryk Szost as he finished third in the 2nd Orlen Warsaw Marathon in 2:08:55 as Ethiopia's Tadese Tola won in 2:06:55 and Kenyan Levy Matebo was second 2:08:09.

The host country made the podium in the women's race as Iwona Lewandowska was second in 2:32:42, beaten by 2:12.00 by Ethiopia's Ehile Bizuayehu.

Slovakian Matej Toth maintained his fine form as he triumphed over 20km at the Podebrady Walking Meet and Match.

He won in 1:20:00 at this EA Permit event as he beat Rafal Fedaczynski, of Poland, who was second in a personal best of 1:20:18 with Ukraine's Andriy Kovenko third 1:20:26. In fourth, France's Kevin Campion also had a lifetime best as he finished in 1:20:39.

The versatility of the Czech Republic's Anezka Drahotova was on show in the women's race. She had achieved a personal best in the half marathon the week before and now she won the 20km in Podebrady in 1:29:43, with Brazil's Erica De Sena second in 1:30:43 and Lithuanian Neringa Aidietyte achieving a personal best of 1:30:54 to take third.

In the match itself, Slovakia took the men's title ahead of France and Ukraine and the Czech women beat Poland and Slovakia.

Romania ended the Balkan Walking Championships in Balchik as the leading nation with 42 points, from Türkiye with 30 and Greece with 29 but the senior individual titles went the way of Serbia - as Vladimir Savanovic won the men's 20km in 1:26:31 - and Greece, as Despoina Zapounidou took the women's in 1:34:56.

There was a superb hammer performance by leading Hungarian youngster Bence Halasz in Szombathely.

With the youth hammer of 5kg, Halasz, who turns 17 in August, not only improved the Hungarian record to a superb 84.43m, but it was the best ever by a European Youth and the third best of all-time for the age group.

Across the country, Bekescsaba was the venue for the Hungarian 20km national walking championships where Mate Hellebrandt, in 1:24:38, and Viktoria Madarasz, in 1:35:32, were crowned champions.

On the track, Belgium's Anna Zagre used the warm conditions in Tallahassee to post two good early season times at the Seminole Invitational as she won the 200m in 23.31 and the 100m hurdles in 13,04.
