Renaud Lavillenie will not compete again before he bids to win the world title for the first time.

But the world record itself will not be on his mind.

The brilliant French pole vaulter is the Olympic champion and triple European champion but the outdoor world crown is the one to elude him so far.

He won silver in Moscow two years ago having taken bronze in Berlin in 2009 and Daegu in 2011.

After winning in London last Saturday with a sensational 6.03m, he has returned to France for his final stint of training based on getting everything right.

The outdoor world record is Sergey Bubka’s 6.14m from 1994 and while Lavillenie cleared 6.05m in Eugene in May to achieve his personal best, it will be the lower heights that will be on his mind as he prepares for the IAAF World Championships which start in Beijing on August 22.

Lavillenie, 28, told European Athletics: 'I will train to jump 5.85m and 5.90m many times and it is not more about the height but more about the technical jump, that is the key to be consistent.

'I will do a lot of vaulting - I have to train for that - and I will also do sprints and weight-lifting. Like the usual training, there is no secret. Just to be able to get the body ready for competition.'

In Moscow, Lavillenie was beaten to gold by German’s Raphael Holzdeppe on countback with the pair both on 5.89m, while 12 months ago in Zurich, 5.90m was his winning height as he completed a hat-trick of titles at the European Athletics Championships.

Lavillenie broke Bubka’s world indoor record last year with 6.16m in Donetsk and he knows if he bids for the outdoor mark in Beijing, it will be as the gold medallist.

He said: 'If I try, it will be good because it will mean I will be world champion - but my main aim is to be world champion (not break the world record).

'Even if I won with 5.80m I will be happy. When it comes to the major championships, the main goal is to be first - and not just the world record.'
