  • Lisbon to stage the 2019 SPAR European Cross Country Championships

Lisbon will be the host of the 2019 SPAR European Cross Country Championships, the European Athletics Council decided on Friday (3).

It will be the third time that Portugal has staged the Championships, with the Portuguese capital following on from Oeiras in 1997 and Albufeira in 2010.

The 2019 SPAR European Cross Country Championships will be the 26th edition of the event. Samorin, Slovakia, will be this year’s host on 10 December while the Dutch city of Tilburg will stage the 2018 Championships.

Lisbon memorably staged the 1985 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, which were won by local hero Carlos Lopes just a few months after his 1984 Olympic Games marathon triumph.

“Portugal has been one of the powerhouses of European cross country running for many years, with a number of famous champions, so it is a pleasure to be able to say that we will return there again. I am sure the championships will be excellently organised, just as the previous two editions in Portugal were, and that is one of the main reasons why we selected them,” commented European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen.

“Cross country is popular not only among the runners in Portugal but also the spectators so I’m looking for good crowds to also attend these championships,” he added.
