European indoor pole vault champion Piotr Lisek from Poland ended world champion Sam Kendricks’ long unbeaten streak at the Springermeeting in Cottbus on Wednesday (31) evening.

Kendricks had amassed a winning sequence of 17 competitions stretching back to 2016 but the American had to settle for second with 5.78m behind the in-form Pole.

Lisek cleared 5.83m for victory at the ISTAF Indoor in Berlin on Friday night to defeat Olympic champion Thiago Braz and world record-holder Renaud Lavillenie and he matched his season’s best in Cottbus on his first attempt to take another impressive scalp.

Lisek, who cleared every height up to 5.83m on his first attempt, then raised the bar to 5.88m but that height proved beyond his capacity last night.

Former world indoor champion Konstadinos Filippidis from Greece cleared 5.70m to finish third, one place ahead of 2011 world champion Pawel Wojciechowski from Poland with 5.60m.

Ukraine’s Yuliya Levchenko claimed three medals from as many major championships in 2017 and the 20-year-old looks poised to challenge for more silverware at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham next month.

Levchenko, who was crowned female Rising Star at the Golden Tracks award ceremony in Vilnius, Lithuania in October, won the competition at 1.94m before equalling her indoor lifetime best of 1.97m.

Croatia’s Ana Simic cleared 1.91m to finish second.
