  • Lysenko matches world lead with 2.40m clearance in Monaco

Danil Lysenko was in prime position as gold-medal favourite for the high jump at the European Championships in Berlin and if he needed another performance to prove his current form, he duly produced that with a superb display to equal Mutaz Essa Barshim's world-leading mark of 2.40m, breaking his personal best by two centimetres.

The reigning world indoor champion, who is competing as an Authorised Neutral Athlete, was already second on the world lists with 2.37m from Lausanne and when he went over at 2.33m, he had victory secured from China's Wang Yu (2.30m).

But now it was about sending out messages, showing his rivals just what a fantastic summer he is having and the 21-year-old soared over at 2.40m on his first attempt to complete an unblemished series of clearances. He had started at 2.20m and went through the card at 2.24m, 2.27m, 2.30m, 2.33m and then 2.40m all on his first attempts.

The title is now his to lose as Berlin co-hosts the first multi-sports European Championships with Glasgow next month. Lysenko said: 'It was the first big step in the special territory. The next ones should follow, for example in Berlin.”

Teammates Sergey Shubenkov and Anzhelika Sidorova were equally superb in Monaco ahead of the European Championships.

Shubenkov is a double European 110m hurdles champion, having lifted the crown in 2012 and 2014, and he is ready to chase a third title after winning here in 13.07 from Spain's Orlando Ortega, second in 13.18, and France's Pascal Martinot-Lagarde, third in 13.20.

'This is great, to continue winning, it is a very pleasant feeling,' said Shubenkov. 'It is the outcome of the great work I am doing with my coach Sergei Klevtsov.'

In the pole vault, Sidorova matched her personal best from two years ago as she won with a superb 4.85m, ahead of Greece's Olympic, world and European champion Katerina Stefanidi.

Sidorova went over at the second attempt to achieve 4.85m, improving her season's best by three centimetres as Stefanidi shared second with Cuba's Yarisley Silva on 4.80m.

Now Sidorova, who won the European title ahead of Stefanidi in Zurich 2014, is aiming higher and she said: 'To win in Berlin, 4.90m would be needed and that is exactly the result I want to achieve.'

Türkiye's world 200m champion Ramil Guliyev will take some stopping in Berlin and he showed that once again as he dipped under 20 seconds for the third time this summer. Guliyev, who has run 19.90 and 19.92, was second in 19.99 as American Noah Lyles won in a sensational 19.65.
