  • Mahuchikh and Nacheva in record-breaking form with Gyor approaching

Yaroslava Mahuchikh looks set to add to her medal collection at the second edition of the European Athletics U18 Championships in Gyor, Hungary from 5-8 July after a record-breaking performance at the Ukrainian U18 Championships in Lutsk this weekend.

Mahuchikh already led the world and European outdoor U18 lists with a 1.86m clearance but the 16-year-old put clear distance between herself and her rivals after improving her national U18 record to 1.93m to come within two centimetres of the world age-16 best.

Mahuchikh came to the fore in age-group championships last summer, winning the world U18 title in Nairobi before winning at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Gyor in the space of two weeks.

Her teammate Myhaylo Kokhan achieved the same double in the hammer last summer and the 17-year-old prepared for Gyor by winning at the Ukrainian U18 Championships with 82.28m with the 5kg implement. He leads the world U18 lists with 86.78m set in Viimsi, Estonia last month.

Nacheva improves to 14.00m in Sofia

Bulgaria’s Aleksandra Nacheva just missed out on winning the world U18 title in Nairobi last year but the 16-year-old looks set to add another chapter to her country’s rich tradition in the horizontal jumps in Gyor.

Nacheva, who was also fourth at the European Athletics U20 Championships in Grosseto, has already improved her PB from 13.64m to 13.80m in 2018 but she extended that record again to 14.00m - also a European Championships qualifier - at the Bulgarian U20 Championships in Sofia.

Meanwhile, Larissa Iapichino is following in the footsteps of her mother Fiona May, one of the greatest European long jumpers in recent history. Iapichino, 15, set a lifetime best of 6.38m at the Italian U18 Championships in Rieti.

Healy smashes 4:10-barrier in the 1500m

Another name to watch at the European U18 Championships in Gyor is Irish middle distance runner Sarah Healy, who won the 1500m title at the European Youth Olympic Festival last July.

Healy will be competing in the 1500m next month and she leads the European U18 lists by more than 10 seconds after improving her Irish U18 record from 4:13.32 to 4:09.25 in Tubingen, Germany on Saturday.

And while she might not yet harbour aspirations of competing in senior competitions, Healy was also comfortably inside the qualifying time for the European Championships in Berlin.

Dominic Ogbechie cleared a phenomenal world age-15 best of 2.22m during the indoor season and now 16, the Brit prepared for his international debut in Gyor by moving to the top of the world U18 lists with a 2.16m clearance, winning the U20 title at the English Championships in Bedford.
