  • Maslak breaks Czech 200m record in Trinec

Pavel Maslak produced two bursts of tremendous speed at the weekend in a season where he is looking to reach the final at the World Championships in London.

At the Czech Championships in Trinec, Maslak - a five-time world and European indoor champion over 400m - showed the groundwork he is putting in for his main event by running a national 200m record of 20.46 and setting a personal best of 10.30 for the 100m.

The latter of those came on Saturday when he finished second behind Zdenek Stromsik who won in 10.29 and the following day, the 26-year-old improved his national 200m record from 20.49 which had been set when he won bronze at the European Athletics U23 Championships in Tampere, Finland in 2013.

There was a rewriting of the meeting record books in the men’s shot put and women’s javelin. Czech record-holder Tomas Stanek reached 21.61m, the second best distance of his career, in the shot put and world javelin record-holder Barbora Spotakova showed she is approaching her best form, throwing a season’s best of 64.09m to claim yet another domestic title.

The men’s javelin saw a superb throw of 87.07m from Jakub Vadlejch - his fourth throw in excess of the 87 metre-line this summer - while Romana Malacova won the pole vault on countback on 4.50m from Amalie Svabikova, 17, who broke the national U20 record.

It was a good weekend for Czech youngster with Nikola Bendova, 18, breaking the national U20 record in the 200m as she won in 23.38 (-0.1) with two-time world 400m hurdles champion Zuzana Hejnova sixth in 23.94.

Only 15, Barbora Malikova was another young star who impressed as she won the 400m in a lifetime best of 54.03 while Filip Sasinek set a championship record of 3:43.51 in a solo race in the 1500m.

Halasz beats Pars for Hungarian hammer title
The progress goes on for reigning world and European U20 hammer champion Bence Halasz, who produced a brilliant display to beat 2012 Olympic champion Krisztian Pars at the Hungarian Championships in Szekesfehervar.

Halasz, 19, won with 75.32m from Pars with 74.85m and after winning the European U20 title in Eskilstuna, Sweden two years ago, he will be looking to continue his progression with a gold medal at the European Athletics U23 Championships in Bydgoszcz next month.

It might be presumptuous to talk about a changing of the guard but Halasz will ensure Hungary will be strongly represented on the international stage even when Pars, 35, hangs up his spikes.

Norbert Rivasz-Toth will also be among the medal hopes in Bydgoszcz after setting a national U23 javelin record of 80.50m. Two-time European indoor champion Anita Marton won the shot put title with 18.55m and Balazs Baji triumph in the 110m hurdles in 13.29, the third fastest time of his career.

Francisco Belo broke the national record as he won the discus with 62.01m on the final day of the Portuguese Championships in Vagos on Sunday. There were also triple jump wins from European indoor champion Nelson Evora with 16.78m while European outdoor champion Patricia Mamona won the women’s triple jump with a wind-aided 14.40m.

At the Serbian championships in Krusevac, Amela Terzic, the two-time European U23 1500m champion, won the 800m in 2:04.30.
