Sara Moreira takes herself into the unknown on Sunday - when she makes her marathon debut in New York.

Turning 29 just a fortnight ago, the Portuguese runner is ready for the next challenge in a career where she has triumphed with aplomb on the track.

'New York is a fantastic city,' said Moreira, speaking to rtp.pt. 'This marathon is the best in the world, so it will be special premiering here.'

She will take to the start line with some impressive credentials behind her.

Moreira is a triple gold medallist in the team event at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships - the victories coming in Brussels in 2008, Dublin in 2009 and Albufeira in 2010 - and she has won four European medals on the track.

And at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Prague in March, she will be the defending 3000m champion after her glory in Gothenburg last year, a distance where she won bronze in 2009.

At the European Athletics Championships, she was a 5000m silver medallist in Barcelona in 2010 and a bronze medallist in 2012.

Moreira has arrived in New York in fine form, running a half-marathon best of 1:00:50 in Porto in September.

But naturally the marathon brings a whole new element to any athlete’s life - as much in the recovery as in the race itself, in seeing how the body reacts to going to a distance it has not experienced before at competitive level.

The European Athletics rankings are led by Aliaksandra Duliba who broke the Belarusian national record when she was sixth in Boston in April with 2:21:29 and nine of the top 10 times on the list have come from spring and summer marathons.

The exception is Germany’s Anna Hahner, who is in ninth, after she ran 2:26:44 as she finished seventh in Berlin in September.

In 10th position is Dulce Felix with 2:26:46 from her eighth in London in April and she will join her Portuguese teammate tomorrow as she returns to New York after not completing the race 12 months ago, shortly after the death of her father.

Back in 2011 in New York, Felix ran her marathon personal best of 2:25:40.
