Maksim Nedasekau and Volha Mazuronak were crowned male and female Belarusian Athletes of the Year at a special awards ceremony which was staged at the Astoria Riverside restaurant in Minsk on Tuesday (8) evening.

The European U20 champion in 2017, Nedasekau won his first senior medal at the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships with silver in the high jump behind Germany’s Mateusz Przybylko.

Nedasekau was on the verge of elimination after two failures at 2.28m but the 20-year-old secured a medal with an all-or-nothing clearance at 2.31m before equalling his personal best with a first-time clearance at 2.33m.

Mazuronak won individual gold with victory in the marathon at the European Championships in 2:26:20. With three counters inside the first six, Mazuronak also led Belarus to the team title and the gold medal-winning team was duly named Team of the Year last night.

Nedasekau and Mazuronak’s respective coaches Tatyana Nareiko and Aleksandr Rodichev were also named Coaches of the Year.

It was a good evening for Belarusian high jumpers. Further awards went to world U20 champion Karina Taranda who was named female U20 Athlete of the Year and Dmitry Nabokau who won the Breakthrough of the Year award after improving the national record to 2.36m last summer.
