Pavey's an ageless wonder

Home

Put together the ages of Belgium’s Louise Carton and Isaac Kimeli and the combined total is 42.

On Sunday they both led their club teams to victory at the Lotto Cross Cup in Gent but it was 250 miles away where a world best was being broken by a European.

That came in the Great South Run in Portsmouth, where Great Britain’s Jo Pavey rewrote the records for 10 miles. Her age? 42.

It is a glorious juxtaposition between these successes to prove that it does not matter how old an athlete is: if the desire and determination to succeed is there, it is unlikely to ever go away.

Pavey remains a remarkable track and field character.

In Zurich in the summer of 2014, fresh from her Commonwealth Games 5000m bronze in Glasgow a few weeks before, Pavey celebrated the greatest moment of her athletics life when won gold in the 10,000m at the European Athletics Championships.

She was a month away from her 41st birthday, but retirement never crossed her mind.

Slowly she saw her way through the outdoor season that has just passed, deciding not to go to Beijing for the IAAF World Championships, but instead prepare for 2016, with the Olympic Games in Rio and the defence of her European title in Amsterdam.

And it seems like the perfect preparation as she proved by the south coast of England on Sunday with another superb run.

Kenyan Vivian Cheruiyot, the Beijing 10,000m champion, was too strong for the rest as she won (51:17) but then came Pavey, leading the chasing pack and then powering on to finish second in 52:44, a world over-40 best time ahead of Kenya’s 20-year-old Doris Changeiywo (52:51) and British teammate Gemma Steel (53:06), the reigning SPAR European Cross Country champion.

Pavey broke her personal best for the distance by two seconds, a time that had been set back in 2006.

As she was achieving this new landmark, Carton and Kimeli - both 21 - were maintaining what has been a fabulous year for them in their progression in the sport.

In July they both left the European Athletics U23 Championships in Tallinn with silver medals from the 5000m and now they played key roles in their club’s success.

The first leg of the Lotto Cross Cup saw Carton anchor Meetjesland to victory in the women’s race and Kimeli run the last leg to lead OEH to glory in the men’s event.
