Newly elected European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen supported the IAAF Kids Athletics demonstration on Tuesday during the SportAccord Convention in Sochi, Russia.

I am happy to be here and to support such an initiative. The objective of IAAF Kids Athletics is to make athletics the No.1 participation sport in schools, promote a balanced and healthy lifestyle, and attract our sport’s stars of tomorrow, which is, of course, in line with my vision for our sport to be more relevant on the continent by creating school and club programmes to introduce children to athletics and retain them in our sport.

President Hansen joined the host, IAAF President Lamine Diack, and two 800m running greats, Denmark’s three-time world champion Wilson Kipketer and Russia’s 2004 Olympic champion Yuriy Borzakovskiy, acting in the role of ambassadors.

Romania’s Gabriela Szabo the former Olympic and world 5000m champion, who has been serving as a European Athletics Council member since 2011, was also present to give her support.

The focus was, of course, on the main participants, the children. Six teams of kids aged 12 years old drawn from Sochi schools took part in a series of seven fun activities that covered the core skills of athletics: running, jumping and throwing.

President Diack, Kipketer and Borzakovskiy began the afternoon talking to the children about their own experiences as athletes and what had motivated them to take up athletics and continue to pursue a healthy lifestyle long after retiring from competition.
