European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen showed his support for HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco’s charitable foundation at a special event Tuesday on the sidelines of the IAAF World Championships in Beijing.

President Hansen attended a presentation of the foundation’s “Oceans 2015” initiative alongside outgoing IAAF President Lamine Diack, President-elect Sebastian Coe, and French Athletics Federation President Bernard Amsalem.

The Monaco-based foundation was set up by Prince Albert in 2006 with the purpose to protect the environment and to encourage sustainable development.

Its Oceans 2015 initiative looks at the issues of acidification, warmer oceans, and sea level rise and the threat to all marine ecosystems.

“The philosophy of Prince Albert’s foundation is in line with what European Athletics is working to achieve with its Green Inspiration project, where we engage with members of the public through sustainability activities linked to our events,” said President Hansen. “European Athletics is pleased to support his commendable commitment to such important environmental issues.”

Earlier this year, the city of Eskilstuna, which prides itself of being one of the most sustainable in Europe, set new environmental standards in its approach to hosting the European Athletics Junior Championships.

As a result of its efforts, the Swedish Athletic Federation was awarded the IAAF Sustainable Development World Trophy last week during the 50th IAAF Congress.
