European champions Nataliya Pryshchepa and Maryan Zakalnytskky were voted Ukrainian Athletes of the Year by the Ukrainian Athletic Federation.

Pryshchepa successfully defended her title in the 800m in Berlin and Zakalnytskky won the first gold medal of the championships with victory in the 50km race walk, winning in 3:46:32 on a sweltering morning in the German capital.

Zakalnytskky won a second accolade as the silver medal-winning team from the World Race Walking Team Championships in Taicang, China were named Ukrainian Team of the Year.

Japanese race walkers swept the individual and team medals in the 50km race walk but Zakalnytskky finished fourth individually in a lifetime best of 3:44:59 to lead the Ukrainians to silver in the team race.

Reigning European U18 champions Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Myhaylo Kokhan were also crowned Ukrainian Junior Athletes of the Year.

Mahuchikh cleared 1.94m to win gold at the European Athletics U18 Championships and improved to 1.95m to win again at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. In her last competition in the youth ranks, Mahuchikh improved to 1.96m in Minsk last month to equal the world U18 best.

Mahuchikh’s coach Tetyana Stepanova was also named Coach of the Year.

Kokhan was similarly prolific in 2018, winning the European U18 title with a world U18 best of 87.82m before winning at the Youth Olympic Games. He also won silver at the World U20 Championships in Tampere.
