Latvia’s Ineta Radevica and Romania’s Gabriela Szabo have been announced #BeActive ambassadors for this year’s European Week of Sport, which will run from 23-30 September.

Both women are now prominent sports administrators but first came to public attention thanks to their illustrious athletics careers.

Radevica won the European long jump title in Barcelona in 2010 and was recently elected president of the Latvian Athletic Federation while Szabo won the Sydney 2000 Olympic 5000m title in 2000 as well as three world outdoor titles and is now a European Athletics Council member.

The European Week of Sport was set up in 2015 to promote sport and physical activity across the continent - regardless of age, background or fitness level - and European Athletics is pleased to once again be supporting and participating in the European Week of Sport in collaboration with the European Commission.

The campaign theme remains #BeActive and encourages everyone to be active, not only during the European Week of Sport but all year round.

European Athletics has promoted European Week of Sport in parallel with its flagship Running for All programme and races have been encouraged to join the campaign.

A total of 147 registered races from 26 countries participated in the 2016 edition of European Week of Sport 2016 which attracted an estimated 190,000 runners across the continent.
