  • 'I’m ready to stand as President for four more years,' says Hansen

Svein Arne Hansen has told the European Athletics Member Federations that he is ready to run for another four years as President.

In a 50-minute on-stage interview with journalist and athletics expert Alfons Juck at this weekend’s CEO Conference in Minsk, Belarus, Hansen and Juck reviewed the accomplishments of his first term as President to date.

By end of June 2018, Hansen will have visited all but one of the Member Federation countries since he became President in April 2015.

Hansen said, “The first three years have gone by so fast! But during my time as President, I have been most proud of the organisational changes, the work of the head office staff and the commitment of the political level to change and innovation.

“What I want to see now is a cultural shift in the sport so that everyone, from the political level down to the local club level, embraces change and innovation.'

Responding to a question from the audience, Hansen said, “If the Member Federations want me, I will be happy to do a second term as President of European Athletics.”

The European Athletics Elective Congress will be in April 2019.

The focus of the second day of the CEO Conference was on new European Athletics projects and programmes and the support on issues related to Member Federations.

Swedish Athletics Federation President Björn Nilsson and Latvian Athletics Federation President Ineta Radevica both gave case studies of how their Federations are working to improve governance.

Esther Fittko of the German Athletics Federation talked about the importance of gender balance and reviewed the efforts European Athletics has made in this field in the last decade.

European Athletics First Vice President Dobromir Karamarinov spoke about the Focus Federation Programme, where Federations are invited to intensive meetings at the European Athletics Head Office in Lausanne and to take part in a European Athletics Council meeting.

Nicolas Launois from the Head Office gave an update on the results and data project. Bill Glad, meanwhile, updated the audience on the I Run Clean initiative.

President Hansen thanked all the guest speakers and the Belarus Athletics Federation for their outstanding organisation of the Conference.
