Cindy Roleder missed the summer campaign due to injury but the reigning European indoor and outdoor champion looks poised to challenge for medals at continental and global level again.

Roleder equalled her lifetime best of 7.84 to win the 60m hurdles title on the first day of the German Indoor Championships in Dortmund where she defeated reigning world 100m hurdles bronze medallist Pamela Dutkiewicz in 7.89.

Roleder might not be renowned for her start but she was even with Dutkiewicz at the first flight of hurdles and held a narrow margin over her long-time domestic rival through the line. While Dutkiewicz has put an end to her indoor season, Roleder is planning to compete at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham next month when she could upset the American hegemony in the sprint hurdles.

“We are already preparing for the World Indoor Championships; I trained a lot this week. Nevertheless, I felt good and I can reproduce these fast times,” said Roleder, who won a silver medal in the 100m hurdles at the World Championships in 2015.

“I am extremely excited about the World Indoor Championships and I am extremely motivated. I'm going for the fourth or fifth time. It is extremely tight. The others have also run fast but I know that I can do that.”

Dutkiewicz finishes her indoor campaign with a season’s best of 7.83 to her credit and eight times under the eight second-mark. Next on the agenda are training camps in South Africa and Tenerife in preparation for the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships but Dutkiewicz is also not discounting the challenge of sprint hurdles from beyond her own country.

“With a view to the European Championships in the summer you cannot forget some of us besides Cindy and myself, especially Alina Talay. She has been at the forefront for many years. Anyone can do it in a European Championships final; it also depends on experience,” said Dutkiewicz.

“It will be exciting if we all stay healthy, especially for the spectators.”

Talay was in action at the Belarusian Indoor Championships in Mogilyov where she won the 60m hurdles title in 7.91 ahead of reigning world U20 100m hurdles champion Elvira Herman in 8.05.
